In collaboration with the Water Resilience Coalition, WaterAid has produced a number of resources to help companies understand how to invest in water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) in the workplace, and to make progress on WASH resilience in their supply chains and communities.

Access to clean water, decent sanitation and good hygiene is critical to building resilience to the two biggest threats facing humanity today: infectious diseases, such as COVID-19, and climate change.

For companies with supply chains in water-stressed and WASH-vulnerable countries, safeguarding employees and local communities is paramount to operational and financial security. The impact of COVID-19 on the health of workforces has highlighted underlying risks to business continuity, which climate change is further exacerbating through rapidly increasing water stress.

By fast-tracking access to WASH in supply chain operations, the private sector is in a unique position to affect positive social and environmental outcomes while simultaneously securing business resilience. But how does it begin?

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, WaterAid joined forces with the Water Resilience Coalition in a call for collective action to propel access to clean water to the top of the corporate agenda. These resources were produced in collaboration with the coalition and aim to progress WASH-resilience in the supply chains and communities in which companies operate, by enabling companies to:

  • Implement effective hygiene protocol in emergency response to COVID-19 and beyond
  • Self-assess broader existing WASH risks
  • Understand where WASH investment is required to safeguard people and operations
